How to practice English speaking on your own?

A lot of English learners ask this question: ''Is it possible for me to practice English speaking on my own?'' The answer of this question is yes, it is possible to practice English speaking individually. Actually, for many people it is not just a possibility, it is a must. Why? Let's make some calculations together to understand.

Let's say you have English lessons at your school, at a language course, at your university etc. There are nearly 15-20 students in a classroom and you are one of them. You have nearly 8 English lessons every week and each lesson lasts for 40 minutes. Among these 8 lessons, 2 of them are spared for speaking (by the way I am being a bit generous about this ratio). When these 80 minutes are separated for each student and the teacher, you will probably have 3-4 minutes speaking time. Also let's say that you also speaking 4-5 minutes in other lessons. As a result, you speak 8-10 minutes every week. The question is, ''Are 8 or 10 minutes enough to become good at English speaking?''. I think you know the answer to this question.

If you don't have any other means to practice English speaking such as talking to your friends, having conversations with native speakers etc., practicing speaking individually is a must for you. You have to practice your speaking everyday on your own in order to improve your speaking level. Here is how you can practice your speaking on your own.
  1. Find some conversation questions. You can find conversation questions easily on Google. Just search English conversation questions on Google and you will end up with many websites providing conversation questions.
  2. Choose a topic appropriate for your level. Among the conversation topics you have found, you have to choose a topic appropriate for your level. For example, if you are an elementary or pre intermediate learner, you can choose topics such as free time, family, friends, holidays, food, drinks. But if you are a B1 or B2 level learner, you should choose topics such as stress, culture, environment in which you will be able to use complex grammar structures.
  3. Start asking the question to yourself and answer them. Yes you have heard it right. You will talk to yourself. You will ask some questions to yourself and answer them. You will do it as much as you can. Just imagine somebody is sitting in front of you and asking some questions to you. Answer him or her.
  4. Record your voice and analyze it with your teacher. Record your voice and listen to it with somebody who is good at English. Try to correct your mistakes by getting feedback from other people.
This method is an alternative to other speaking practice methods. By practicing like this, you can improve your fluency, accuracy and pronunciation. It is especially beneficial for your fluency because even if you make some grammar mistakes you will improve your speaking fluency since you can speak for a long time without needing anyone else. Also by recording your voice and analyzing it with somebody else, you can improve your accuracy and pronunciation. Try to do it everyday and you will see the change in your English speaking in a short period of time.
