How to practice English Pronunciation?

Pronunciation is one of the most important qualities for an English learner to become native-like. In order to be understood by other people, a person has to pronounce the words in a correct way. Pronunciation is also important in terms of understanding what you hear. Just knowing the meanings of words isn't enough, in order to understand and convey messages you have to be competent at pronunciation. The question is 'How to practice English pronunciation?'. Thanks to the abundance of different materials we have a lot of alternatives to practice English pronunciation. Let's take a look at some of them:


  1. First, learn the international phonetic alphabet. The international phonetic alphabet is a really useful tool to improve pronunciation skills. Because sometimes we are mistaken about the usages of some sounds. Sometimes we feel that the same symbols are pronounced the same in our native language and English but that's not always the case. The a sound in English can be different than the a sound in your native language and they can be shown differently in the international phonetic alphabet. In order to avoid similarity mistakes, you can learn the international phonetic alphabet. There are many websites and videos on the internet through which you can learn the international phonetic alphabet. By the way, remember that you don't have to learn all the sounds if you just want to learn English pronunciation. You can just learn the sounds in English.
  2. Listen to competent English speakers. Listening is one of the best tools to improve English pronunciation. Listen to competent native speakers to improve your English pronunciation. Remember though, not all native speakers are competent in terms of pronunciation. Don't accept everything you hear as the correct pronunciation. Try to choose listening sources by competent native speakers.
  3. Imitate native speakers.  Imitation can be really helpful in terms of getting better at pronunciation. While you are listening to something, try to find the transcript (written version of the listening file). When you hear a word whose pronunciation you aren't familiar with, repeat it after the speaker. By doing this you can learn the pronunciations of unknown words. 
  4. Read aloud. You can find an audio book to practice English pronunciation. While you are listening the book, repeat everything you hear after the person who is reading the book. In order to do this, try to find an audio book which is slow enough to be understood and repeated. 
  5. Get help from other people. Never feel afraid to make mistakes and get help from other people. If you have other English learners around you, always ask them how to pronounce the unknown words. Also remember to ask the pronunciations to at least two different people if they aren't native speakers in order to avoid learning pronunciations in an incorrect way. 
  6. Record your voice and analyze it with your teacher. Error correction is an effective way to improve English pronunciation. Check your pronunciation with your teacher to find out which words you pronounce in a wrong way. By doing this you can learn lots of new pronunciations.
  7. Use online dictionaries. The best part of learning pronunciations nowadays are online dictionaries. You can easily check the pronunciations of the words by checking them. Try to find a good one and use it on your smart phone.
  8. Always be careful. It is really hard to change the pronunciation of a word after you learn it in an incorrect way. So you have to be careful while learning the pronunciation of a word for the first time.
